Why Open Conversations Matter — and How Managers Can Lead the Way

Every year in early February, the UK unites for Time to Talk Day, a campaign led by charity Mind to spark conversations about mental health and break down the stigma that still surrounds it.
This year, on 5 February 2026, millions of people will take part — in homes, schools, workplaces and communities — to talk, to listen and to support one another.

What Time to Talk Day Is All About

Time to Talk Day is the nation’s biggest mental health conversation. Its message is simple but powerful: start a conversation as small conversations make a big difference. Whether that’s sending a message to a friend, inviting a colleague for a coffee, or simply asking “How are you really doing?”, that first step of opening up is central to better mental health for everyone. Talking openly can reduce stigma, help people feel understood, and empower them to access support when they need it.

In workplaces across the UK, including yours, this campaign serves as an important reminder that mental health is not private or taboo — it’s a shared experience and a common responsibility.

Why Talking Makes a Difference

We know from both lived experience and research that talking about mental health isn’t just feel-good rhetoric. Conversations can:

  • Normalise mental health experiences, making it easier for individuals to share what they’re going through.

  • Spot early signs of distress, giving managers and colleagues the chance to respond supportively.

  • Create more compassionate teams, where people feel psychologically safe and valued.

This isn’t just good for people — it’s good for business. Organisations with open cultures tend to see lower absence, higher performance and stronger retention because employees feel supported rather than isolated when they’re struggling.

The Critical Role of Managers

Workplace conversations matter most when managers are confident and equipped to have them.

Yet many managers feel under-prepared to talk about mental health in a way that is empathetic, appropriate and effective. That’s where targeted training makes all the difference.

At Clarity Occupational Health, we have devised a 2-stage mental wellbeing programme, stage 1 aimed at upskilling line managers to actively support employees by spotting early warning signs, removing the stigma, encouraging open conversations, positively managing the issues and signposting.
Stage 2 focusses purely on employees and raising awareness to remove the stigma of mental health and promote open conversations.

Our course Managing Mental Health & Wellbeing in the Workplace for Managers is designed specifically to build this capability.

This one-day training helps managers:

  • Understand the facts about mental health and wellbeing

  • Recognise signs and symptoms of distress

  • Learn how to offer support and hold constructive conversations

  • Navigate legal and organisational responsibilities around mental health

  • Promote positive wellbeing across their teams

By empowering managers to act with confidence, workplaces can begin to embed lasting cultural change — where mental health conversations are not only encouraged on Time to Talk Day, but every day.

Making Every Day “Time to Talk”

Time to Talk Day is a catalyst that encourages us to start conversations we might otherwise avoid.
But real change happens when those conversations continue throughout the year.

Whether you’re a manager, HR leader, business owner or colleague, you can:

  • Create regular check-ins with your team

  • Offer space and time for meaningful dialogue

  • Signpost to support services early

  • Build a mentally healthy work culture that benefits everyone

At Clarity, we believe that every conversation matters — and that with the right skills and mindset, managers can lead this culture shift.
