Clarity: Inclusion in Action – Supporting Disability and Youth Empowerment in Sierra Leone

At Clarity, we believe that real inclusion is more than policy or branding — it’s something we must act on.

Looking after people is our business. It’s what we do every day across the UK — and this project reflects that same commitment, extended across borders, where the need is great but the spirit is greater.

That’s why we’ve launched Clarity: Inclusion in Action — a long-term impact initiative designed to support disability inclusion, youth opportunity, and community development in one of the world’s most under-resourced regions: Kambia, Sierra Leone.

In partnership with WESOFOD (Welfare Society for the Disabled), a locally-led and disability-run organisation “reaching the hardest to reach”, we are working to help build a future where disabled children, orphans, and vulnerable young people are seen, supported, and included in the everyday fabric of society.

Rebuilding After Conflict

Sierra Leone is a nation still healing from the long-lasting impact of a civil war that ended in 2002. While the country has made strides in recovery, decades of damage to health systems, education infrastructure, and the economy continue to affect millions — especially those already living at the margins.

Many children in rural districts like Kambia grow up without reliable access to clean water, education, or medical care. For children and youth living with disabilities, the challenges are far greater. Stigma, neglect, and the physical inaccessibility of schools, clinics, and public spaces mean they are often isolated, overlooked, or excluded entirely from community life.

According to recent local assessments, a high proportion of these children are also orphans, having lost one or both parents to conflict, disease, or poverty-related causes. These young people are often left to be cared for by extended family or overstretched community networks — with minimal state support.

WESOFOD works at the heart of this challenge, advocating for disability rights, providing mobility equipment, running awareness campaigns, and lobbying for structural inclusion in healthcare, education, and governance.

What We’re Building Together: Clarity House

As a first step, Clarity is proudly supporting the development of Clarity House — a visitor and support centre in Kambia that will offer a safe, accessible base for visiting healthcare workers, educators, social workers, and advocacy trainers.

This physical space will strengthen the delivery of frontline support to disabled individuals and their families across the district. It will also act as a community hub — somewhere local leaders can gather, receive training, and drive forward inclusive policies with the backing of their own people.

It’s more than a building — it’s a foundation for dignity, opportunity, and long-term resilience.

Construction is currently underway, and the project is being shaped by local voices, coordinated by WESOFOD, and supported through Clarity’s financial and communications commitment.

Who We’re Helping

This initiative will directly support 12 local villages in Sierra Leone’s Kambia district, with Clarity House at the heart of what’s being developed as the “Village of Hope” — a central hub for inclusion, resilience, and opportunity.

The communities set to benefit include:

  • Disability advocacy groups working to challenge stigma and secure better access to healthcare, education, and mobility.
  • Youth and outreach programmes supporting orphans and young people with disabilities through informal learning, inclusive play, and life skills.
  • Local health and education teams, who will use Clarity House as a secure base for outreach across remote areas.
  • Parent support networks and women’s groups providing care, protection, and advocacy for children with disabilities and marginalised families.

The need is clear, but so is the drive for change. These communities aren’t waiting for handouts — they’re asking for the tools and support to create a better future. At Clarity, we believe in offering a hand up, not a hand out.

As part of our long-term commitment, Clarity will continue to support this work by sending team members in future years to assist on the ground — contributing skills, capacity, and lived partnership as the project evolves.

Clarity House is only the beginning — a foundation for shared action, meaningful inclusion, and community-led progress that lasts.

How You Can Help

As part of our November 2025 visit to Sierra Leone, we’ll be collecting:

  • Football shirts: (any size, any team) to donate to local youth teams, schools, and inclusive play groups
  • Working tech: Age doesn’t matter, if the device powers on, can be factory reset, and includes a charger. Please check those drawers at home or at work — you might have something that could make a real difference.

If you’re part of Clarity’s extended network — a client, partner, friend, or supporter — and would like to contribute items, please contact us at enquiries@clarityocchealth.co.uk

Collection points and dates will be announced soon.

This is just the beginning of our journey — and we’ll be sharing monthly updates as the campaign unfolds.

Together, we can help build something that lasts.
