Sick Note to Fit Note

Last Updated: 15th February 2011

April the 6th sees the launch of the new "Statement of Fitness for Work" also known as the "fit note" which replaces the Med 6 sickness certificate form (sick note).

The launch of this new initiative means that instead of giving patients a sick note saying they are too sick to work, GPs will be able to say when a patient is able to return to work and provide advice on the changes that need to be made. Under the new scheme GPs could recommend reduced hours, altered duties, workplace adaptations or a phased return to work.

The aim of this initiative is to provide employers with greater flexibility in managing their sickness absence.  There will be a three month transitional period where both sick notes and fit notes will be accepted.

There has been huge debate on the effect of the fit note.  Concern has been voiced by many GPs, OH providers and employers alike regarding the process and how it will be managed.  Undoubtedly, there are concerns over the accuracy of what the employee tells his doctor and the doctor’s understanding of the patient's working environment.

Ultimately this will have a positive impact on the relationship between the employer, the employee and the GP in supporting an environment of cooperation.  This will have a far wider and positive effect on the work life balance of employees.

Clarity Healthcare in conjunction with client sites has launched a pilot scheme to inform local GPs of the Occupational Health support available and have invited them to visit the site to see the variety of roles and the operational restraints placed on the company.  This should allow a more rounded view when completing the "Fit to Work" note.

Cynthia Atwell OBE, Chairperson at Clarity Healthcare Limited said "this initiative is a positive change and will help managers to support employees back to work.  It should compliment Occupational Health and support employee rehabilitation.  Where an employer has access to an occupational health service, they should be consulted and involved in the process."
